The Ardennes, also known as the Ardennais, is a breed of draft horse with a rich history dating back to Ancient Rome. It originates from the Ardennes area in Belgium, Luxembourg, and France. These horses are heavy-boned with thick legs and are primarily used for draft work.
The Ardennes horse has been bred in the Ardennes region for over 2,000 years and has served as the foundation bloodstock for several draft and equine breeds, such as the Swedish Ardennes, Baltic Ardennes, Russian Heavy Draft, Sokolsky, and the Trait Du Nord.
Known for their massive stature and heavy muscling, modern Ardennes horses are recognizable for their strength and resilience. However, their large size and heavy build can sometimes lead to health problems common in many draft breeds.
