A field full of buttercups can be an amazing scene for most of the people, but when it comes to horses those fields are not the perfect pastures for them! Why? Because to horses buttercups are toxic and the good side is that horses are not interested in grazing in those fields when there is another food around the corner. But, you should be well prepared in order to protect your horses when the buttercups are the only vegetation in the field.

You should include both managment practices and chemical control when it comes to this issue. Before buttercups appear you should start managing your pastures. So, first of all you should seed all the bare spots in the field, because buttercups usually bloom in those places.

Prevent your field from overgrazing, because that`s the root of the buttercup issue. Another important thing is to keep the grass in your pastures healthy during the summer. To stop the buttercups from spreading you should mowethe pastures when the buttercups start to bloom.

In early spring use herbicides to prevent the appearance of buttercups, which is also helpfull, but you must know that you might have to sacrifice some of the good grazing. It`s because many of the chemical products will kill legumes, for example clover. So, prepare yourself and always look for some additional guidance.
