RSPCA

Even if you`re not a die-hard animal lover, you`ve almost certainly heard of the RSPCA, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The RSPCA now exists in many countries, including the UK, Australia and the US, among many others. They do amazing work, and a lot of that work is saving abandoned and abused horses, helping them reacclimatize to humans and then helping them find a loving forever home. It`s enough to make your eyes prickle with tears, but the RSPCA puts more into horse rescues than people realize.

According to the RSPCA website, there is no “perfect” way to care for all horses and ponies, which is very true since each one requires something a bit different, but they have outlined five specific welfare needs you need to meet, otherwise they are there to step in to help the horses. These are environment, diet, behavior, company, health and welfare.

So, how does the RSPCA do its job? Well, usually a lot of it is that they get a tip that there is a horse or multiple horses not being cared for properly. They investigate and if they decide that the horses are in fact being neglected or abused in any way they will come and take them away. Typically, the specific branch that responds to the issue is the one that will then take the horses in.

Once they take these horses in, they feed them and properly care for them and work to try and improve their mental health again. Being in a bad situation like that leaves its mark like it would on any human, so these horses need time to readjust to living a happy life. Some cases are more difficult than others, but these people put all of their time and effort into helping them be happy again and work tirelessly to find them amazing homes.

In the last year, the RSPCA rescued 118,994 animals and responded to a call nearly every 28 seconds. This is incredible, and the fact they have the resources to do this is amazing. They also take it one step further. Rather than just rescuing the animals and helping them find a forever home, they go forward and prosecute those who endangered the animal`s welfare. In the last year, they secured 1,781 convictions, which is fantastic.

The RSPCA horse team is even more dedicated because it takes more people and more effort to transport and help horses than other animals, both because of their size and abilities. Rescuing a cat doesn`t take nearly as many people as a potentially dangerous, neglected horse.

This organization does incredible work and if you`re looking to buy a horse, you should consider adopting from the RSPCA and giving one of these amazing horses a second chance.
