In our present climate there are a huge range of complementary services available to the equine world. Everyone is trying to get the best out of their horse, maybe to get a nose or an extra centimetre in competition; others just want their horse to be as happy and content as possible.
I'm an equine Chiropractor, we are similar to Osteopaths and work on the premise that both muscles and joints can cause pain. There are many types of therapists available to work on horses in the present climate and we all vary in styles and training – Physiotherapists are trained to work on the muscular system of the horse, and McTimoney chiropractors although are called chiropractors have very different training and use different techniques to affect the fascia and soft tissues of the horse. What ever the name or qualifications of a therapist, it is important that you work with somebody who you trust and you feel understands your horse and what you are trying to achieve.
It takes four years of full time university training before a Chiropractor or an Osteopath can administer an adjustment with out supervision. It is vital to know when not to adjust a horse and our extensive training allows us to recognise the signs of underlying pathology (disease) or any other contra-indicating factors i.e arthridities, neurological conditions, organ dysfunction etc.. All horses respond to adjustments differently and in many cases less is more. It is important not to overload the system or underestimate the affect of one or two well placed adjustment on a sensitive horse. Other horses need extensive work just to touch the surface!
