Marco Kutscher is a German showjumper from Northern Ostfriesland, born in 1975 he began riding at an early age with his parents. His first foray into the competition ring was with the family mare the Hannoverian Limone, jumping at junior level he soon showed his ambition to progress and learn, he would spend time training at Heckmann stables with his horse Pikeur H who he would begin competing in 1.40m classes +.

Through Dirk Ahlmann, Marco Kutscher would find his way to Ludger Beerbaums stables where he would continue to improve as a rider. In 2002 Marco would become a member of the Audi Quattro Team, in 2004 Marco Kutscher would ride Montender at the Athens olympics were he would pick up two bronze medals one for the team event and one for the individual competition. The following year in 2005 he would win both individual gold and team gold at the European championships again with Montender. In 2011 he would again be a member of the Ferman gold medal winning team at the European champions riding Cornet Obolensky.

Marco Kutscher

Marco Kutscher (born May 2, 1975 in Norden, Lower Saxony) is a German equestrian athlete who originally finished fourth in the show jumping competition at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, but was moved to third place and received a bronze medal after Irish gold medal winner Cian O`Connor was stripped of his medal after a doping scandal involving O`Connor`s horse Waterford Crystal.

Q. My mare is a nightmare to catch and just when I think I�ve got her, she�ll spin round and escape! I�ve tried everything, including feed, but nothing works. Previously, she had only been ridden once a month, but I have taken her through a gradual period of walking and light work to get her fit, and she�s had her back, teeth and saddle checked. Please can you help?

For some reason, your horse has formed a negative association with being caught. It sounds as though she is now having to work more than she is used to. Having rightly had her checked physically, you�ve tried some things to sweeten the experience, but at 14 years old, your mare is pretty wise and can read your intention like a book!

There is an underlying difference in the instinctive behaviour of horses and humans, which is the root cause of most difficulties we encounter with each other.

When a horse doesn�t want to be caught, the human adopts a plan of deception or stealth to capture his prey. The horse instantly wises up to the human with the halter and lead rope hidden behind his back, creeping up suspiciously, and knows he has an ulterior motive!

Under pressure It is not an instinctive thing for a human to put pressure on a horse if she leaves, and to take the pressure off when she stops � most people do the opposite. This is because we think in opposites to the horse � we want to catch her, she wants to leave! If your horse doesn�t want to be caught, ask yourself why.

The answer is different for different individuals, as each situation is unique. However, I�d guess that if all you ever did with her was catch her, give her a feed and a bit of love, then turn her out again, you�d be unlikely to have a catching problem. Now this may not be practical, but it simply illustrates that your horse needs motivation to want to be with you.

Many people find their horse is happy to come in if it�s raining, or when other horses have been caught and they�re suddenly alone, or at feeding time, etc. At these times, the horse is motivated and being caught is what they want.

So how can you motivate your horse to want to be with you at any time? Take a look (from the horse�s point of view) at the effort/reward balance in the time you spend together and see if there is anything you can do to help change the relationship to a more positive one. There�s a wealth of information around these days to help with this.

A little game of cat and mouse

Reverse psychology

Before you can do that, of course, you have to catch her in the first place. One of the most effective techniques involves reverse psychology to get her to choose to be caught. It�s all about changing her mind by controlling her footfall, applying and releasing pressure at the right time. When she chooses to leave as you approach, get her to move her feet more than she wants to. When she stops leaving, reward her with comfort � a more powerful motivator than food. How?

Imagine a shoal of fish darting and turning as they swim. One fish may follow another, then alongside, then leading. They change direction yet stay connected and fluid in their movement. This is the simplest way I can describe what to do with your horse.

If she moves away when you approach, keep approaching and don�t hide the halter � be honest about your intention. She�ll see your approach as pressure and this will cause her to move away.

Cat and mouse�

Keep the pressure on (no more than necessary � you may just be walking after her). If she turns across, stay parallel with her, reducing pressure. If she stops, turns or looks at you, take the pressure off by stopping and dropping your energy or turning away. If she walks towards you, walk away, but not so fast you lose the connection.

Let her gain on you if she will � let her catch you! If she stops and looks but doesn�t come towards you, stop and wait, then approach her quietly, with low energy but without looking creepy! Breathe, smile and approach her from an angle, or walk in a zig-zag towards her shoulder, rather than face-to-face. If she leaves again, repeat the process. This will probably take many repetitions.

Be patient � she will test your resolve! You�ll be exhibiting your ability to move her feet and by being calm, clear and consistent, your horse will start to see you differently.

Don�t catch her!

When she finally allows you close enough to touch, don�t grab her. Scratch or stroke her � make it a pleasure. Show her the halter, let her sniff or nibble it if she will. If she takes off, it�s because you haven�t created enough desire in her to be with you.

Don�t worry or get frustrated, repeat the process until she accepts you touching her. Ideally, this would be a good place to quit on the first day. You may even find that as you walk away, she will follow you. Either way, repeat the same thing the next day to reinforce the experience. Progressively build up what you ask her to accept over a few days, until she is happy to be caught up and taken out.

The only time you remove pressure is when she stops leaving. Any other time, keep her moving. Show her that leaving has consequences � ie, pressure, either mental or physical, and that comfort is only to be found with you.

Horses are smart, and pretty soon, she will work out that being caught and going for a ride is the easier option!

Remember, horses vote with their feet! The more anxious we are to catch them, the more we resort to stealth � our predatory nature makes us want to capture our prey. Horses are very sensitive to intention, and our body language shows what we intend in ways too subtle for us to read, but not for our horses.

Top tips

The smaller the paddock, the more concentrated this experience will be. Think of it as a game of chess, rather than chase. A little energy will need to be expended, but the less adrenaline-fuelled it is, the better, safer and more positive it will be.

Don�t begin this process when you have limited time, and stop on a good note � however long it takes. Repeat for several days in a row. The reason this idea works well is that it mirrors how horses communicate, motivate and establish relationships with each other.

As horses are gregarious herd animals who rely on numbers for safety, the herd must be bonded to keep it together. The more an individual is isolated and pushed out, the more he wants to �join-up� and get back to the group � and the stronger that bond is, to a horse or a human.
