`We [Oehlhof and the horse’s owner] had a one-year deal. We just agreed we were going to do something else. We’re leaving on good terms. I would like to keep this horse.”
Reserve Champion Shimmerz (Smart Lil Ricochet x Zee Dually x Dual Pep), a 5-year-old gelding owned by Weatherford, Texas, husband and wife cutters Casey and Codie Green, marked a 221.5 with Casey Green Tuesday night to earn $5,000. The horse bred by John and Hope Mitchell, Weatherford, Texas, and previously owned by Skip and Elizabeth Queen, Lipan, Texas, had previously earned about $21,000.
Larami Stewart, 19, and a barrel racer on the rodeo team at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, won her first high-profile cutting event and $4,197 - her top cutting check - Tuesday by guiding Haids Screamin Cat to a 217 in the $2,000 Limit Rider finals.
Mike Stewart, Munday, Texas, purchased Haidas Screamin Cat (High Brow Cat x Heavenly Haida x Haidas Little Pep) last April. The horse, trained by Cutis Bass, Seymour, Texas, had previously earned $31,289. Larami and the horse qualified for the 5/6-Year-old Amateur finals at The Bonanza Cutting in Glen Rose, Texas, in late winter.
Tuesday’s victory, achieved by setting the bar high enough from a leadoff draw that none of five other finals duos could top it, ranks as her top moment as a cutter, Stewart said.
“It’s exciting,” she said. Stewart credited Bass, Russell Harrison, Lee Francois and Casey Green for providing her with standout help in the arena and added the horse fits her well.
Munday is a West Texas town between Abilene and Wichita Falls. The Stewart family farms cotton and wheat and runs cattle, Larami said. She started competing as a barrel racer at age 10, but gave up the sport during her high school years to concentrate on cutting. Stewart resumed barrel racing last year when she joined her college rodeo team. She’ll start her sophomore year of college this fall.
Godinez moved to Texas from Mexico 12 years ago. He has worked with trainer Matt Budge at Jackpot Ranch the past five years. He `started at the bottom,` cleaning stalls and changing saddles, and has worked his way up to loping horses at the ranch.
Budge and Jackpot Ranch owner Terry Green, who owns Chulas Merada, a prior career winner of more than $130,000, have occasionally sent Godinez out to compete as a cutter armed with some really good horses the past three years.
`I appreciate it,” Godinez said. `I’d won at weekend shows twice and I’d gotten a couple of second places, but this is my first big check
