Peptolistic, a 2007 stallion battling back from a right-leg fracture that forced him to miss eight months of early training, and his trainer from the start, Shannon Hall, shot to the top of the 4-Year-Old Open pack with a 223 to win the championship and $7,500 as The Non Pro plus The Open cutting concluded Tuesday at State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. More good news at The Non Pro plus The Open is the 17-year-old event attracted a record 902 entries and paid out a record $374,111 in 23 limited and any-age events. Both totals topped prior records of 772 entries and a $351,620 payout at last year’s event.

Peptolistic (Peptoboonsmal x Moms Stylish Socks x Docs Stylish Oak) had earned less than $1,000 prior to competing in Oklahoma City. Hall, Comanche, Okla., identified the blue roan as a potential winner early in his 2-year-old training. He credited owner Tim Drummond, Pawhuska, Okla., with displaying exceptional patience and faith in him as he allowed the horse to heal and Hall to plan for its eventual return to competition.

I kept telling Tim ‘I think this is a special horse.’ He was great to stick it out with me,” Hall said. The NCHA Riders Hall of Fame member also credited Weatherford, Texas, veterinarian Dr. Chris Ray for catching the horse’s right-front leg fracture early, plus Oklahoma horseman Frank Merrill and Weatherford, Texas, horsewoman Colleen Holt for helping Peptolistic rest, heal and rehabilitate from a career-threatening situation.

At The Non Pro plus The Open, Peptolistic finally showed why Hall asked to keep him in training. “This is the first time when I came to an event and knew he was prepared,” Hall said. “I think he’s a really special horse and I’m glad I got to show it today.”

Reserve Champion Nieves – named after her breeder and trainer Ed Dufurrena’s great-grandmother – marked a 221.5 in the finals to earn $5,000. The mare (Cats Merada x Smart Little Boogie x EG Southern Dancer) had previously earned less than $2,000.

Nieves’ owner and her trainer/breeder’s son, Brandon Duffurena, also guided the mare to the 4-Year-Old Non-Pro finals with a solid first-go 216. That duo struggled with a 194 in their finals, but still went home with an additional $900. Ed and Brandon Dufurrena both plan to compete with Nieves at next month’s NCHA Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth.

Dualin Puddy Tap and Texas trainer Steve Oehlhof made several finals last year, then struggled while not making any in early 2011, but they broke out of the slump in a big way Tuesday by winning the 5/6 Open with a 222 to earn $7,500.

The 5-year-old stallion (Dual Pep x Puddy Tap x High Brow Cat), bred by Phil and Mary Ann Rapp, Weatherford, Texas, and owned since early 2006 by Gordon Sevig, Walford, Iowa, has spent about a year training with Oehlhof at a Grandview, Texas, training facility Sevig owns.

Oehlhof has trained horses for Sevig and other clients at that facility the past year, but his one-year agreement to work with Sevig expires soon. Dualin Puddy Tap and the trainer have won just under $50,000 within the past year. They made 2010 limited-age finals at the West Texas Futurity, Music City Futurity, Brazos Bash and Southern Futurity. Their victory Tuesday night in Oklahoma City gave the horse his first championship title.

Oehlhof celebrated his first-year anniversary with wife Missy Jean Oehlhof on Sunday. He’s scheduled to compete again with Dualin Puddy Tap at July’s NCHA Summer Spectacular. That might or might not be the last time they compete together, he said.

`We [Oehlhof and the horse’s owner] had a one-year deal. We just agreed we were going to do something else. We’re leaving on good terms. I would like to keep this horse.”

Reserve Champion Shimmerz (Smart Lil Ricochet x Zee Dually x Dual Pep), a 5-year-old gelding owned by Weatherford, Texas, husband and wife cutters Casey and Codie Green, marked a 221.5 with Casey Green Tuesday night to earn $5,000. The horse bred by John and Hope Mitchell, Weatherford, Texas, and previously owned by Skip and Elizabeth Queen, Lipan, Texas, had previously earned about $21,000.

Larami Stewart, 19, and a barrel racer on the rodeo team at South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, won her first high-profile cutting event and $4,197 - her top cutting check - Tuesday by guiding Haids Screamin Cat to a 217 in the $2,000 Limit Rider finals.

Mike Stewart, Munday, Texas, purchased Haidas Screamin Cat (High Brow Cat x Heavenly Haida x Haidas Little Pep) last April. The horse, trained by Cutis Bass, Seymour, Texas, had previously earned $31,289. Larami and the horse qualified for the 5/6-Year-old Amateur finals at The Bonanza Cutting in Glen Rose, Texas, in late winter.

Tuesday’s victory, achieved by setting the bar high enough from a leadoff draw that none of five other finals duos could top it, ranks as her top moment as a cutter, Stewart said.

“It’s exciting,” she said. Stewart credited Bass, Russell Harrison, Lee Francois and Casey Green for providing her with standout help in the arena and added the horse fits her well.

Munday is a West Texas town between Abilene and Wichita Falls. The Stewart family farms cotton and wheat and runs cattle, Larami said. She started competing as a barrel racer at age 10, but gave up the sport during her high school years to concentrate on cutting. Stewart resumed barrel racing last year when she joined her college rodeo team. She’ll start her sophomore year of college this fall.

Godinez moved to Texas from Mexico 12 years ago. He has worked with trainer Matt Budge at Jackpot Ranch the past five years. He `started at the bottom,` cleaning stalls and changing saddles, and has worked his way up to loping horses at the ranch.

Budge and Jackpot Ranch owner Terry Green, who owns Chulas Merada, a prior career winner of more than $130,000, have occasionally sent Godinez out to compete as a cutter armed with some really good horses the past three years.

`I appreciate it,” Godinez said. `I’d won at weekend shows twice and I’d gotten a couple of second places, but this is my first big check
