Sunset Hill Farm
Sunset Hill is a beautiful, 117 acre, world-class equestrian facility located in Woodbine (Howard County), Maryland. Under the careful guidance of owner Patrick McCuan and McCuan Farms, LLC, every structure, paddock, and arena have been renovated and designed to cater to dressage, jumper, and eventing disciplines.

AAn agriculturally preserved farm rooted deeply in Maryland`s horse history

Sunset Hill Farm has a diverse history dating back to the turn of the 20th century. The land was originally an agricultural property for farming sheep, corn, and soybeans. Jerry Hoffberger, former owner of the Baltimore Orioles, purchased the farm in the early 1970s. It was at this time that Sunset Hill Farm was born and became a state-of-the-art Thoroughbred facility.

Hoffberger bred Thoroughbreds that went on to race in the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont. He created a legacy as he syndicated horse racing in Howard County Maryland and the entire Nation. Sunset Hill was once the home to such well-known thoroughbred sires as Run The Gantlet and Northern Jove.

After many years as a hunter/jumper lesson farm, in 2005, Patrick McCuan and McCuan Farms, LLC purchased the property and renamed it Sunset Hill Farm.

McCuan Farms, LLC has totally renovated and redesigned every structure and field to bring the farm today beyond its original grandeur. With a friendly, experienced staff providing superior care, Sunset Hill Farm has once again created an equestrian haven for riders and horses alike.

Full Moon Eventing - Event Horses For Sale
Jackie grew up on a small ranch in the San Joaquin Valley. She rode cutting horses competitively throughout high school. While attending the University of Hawaii, she trained and showed Quarter Horses. Returning to California after college, she pursued her childhood dream of riding racehorses.

She worked as an Assistant Trainer and Exercise Rider for six years. In 1983, she and her then husband moved to Grass Valley where they owned and operated Full Moon Farm, creating a race and event horse rehabilitation facility which they ran for fourteen years.

Jackie was extremely successful in her Eventing career, with many horses, but the standout was an off-the-track thoroughbred, Mountain Music. They competed through Advanced level winning Horse of the Year honors for Area VI at each level up to the Advanced level. She and Mountain Music were chosen to ride with the US Eventing Team Coach, Jack Le Goff, in three different US Equestrian Team Training Sessions over a three year period. Jackie considers Mr. Le Goff both her mentor and her friend.

She began her coaching career during that same period and was most influenced by Jack in her teaching style.

In 1997, life took a different turn and Full Moon Farm was sold. Jackie built a new facility on a much smaller scale in Southern Grass Valley where she teaches her students. In 2004, she completed the United States Eventing Instructor Certification Program, and is currently only one of a handful of certified Eventing instructors in California.

Jackie teaches at her facility and travels to events, coaching her Full Moon Eventing team.

For fun, Jackie enjoys bringing her own horse up through the levels of Dressage. Any additional spare time, she mountain bikes in the summer and downhill skis in the winter.

Foshay Farms Eventing

I guess most of this is due to my grandmother’s passionate love of horses… This whole thing can trace its roots to Helen Campbell and her livery horse, Silver, the 1930’s, Fredericton, my tolerant grandfather (Chet), and good fortune.

My mother, Janet, and her sister, Andrea handily proved that the horse fanaticism is genetic. They showed for many years in the Maritimes, championing great horses named Trooper and Johnny Go Lightly.

Open Gaits Stables was a gift to Helen from Chet, built at the foot of Smythe Street in Fredericton in 1959. It would remain the spiritual base of our horse endeavours until 1989. The Fredericton Pony Club in O’Dell Park, just a short hack away, provided the structure in the early days. The Pony Club was a force in those days. For more than ten years I learned the many facets of horsemanship from Dr. Judith Hagerman.

In 1983, I first ventured south – to the Grays’ Puckerbrush Farm in Dixmont Maine. That was where I first learned of eventing. That was the year that I first rode with Tad Coffin, the American Olympian who would become a major influence in my life.

In 1986, under the direction of Ms. Barbara Kemp, we built the first course and ran the first event at Foshay. This would eventually continue the tradition which had been the Fredericton Horse Show.

In 1987 I spent my first summer with the Laframboises’ at Ferme de la Montagne in Luskville, Quebec. Theirs was a family endeavour – mother (Marianne) and seven daughters. Second eldest, Lorraine, would prove to be “my coach” – a title she still sports to this day.

In 1988, father Bob showed that he had been paying close attention all those years, and chaired the National Pony Club Rally at Foshay.

In early 1989, we took the show on the road, and this grew to be Foshay Farms Eventing. The principal horses were Gordonstoun, Carcroft Tiger and Risky Business. In 1990, we met Jules Nyssen while training in Southern Pines, North Carolina; he would become a major and lasting influence and friend. With tremendous support and guidance, we proudly joined the 1992 Canadian Olympic Team in Barcelona, Spain. Risky Business and I finished 22nd of 85 starters.

In 1993, I returned to the University of New Brunswick. I did excuse myself for one semester in 1996 to take a shot at the Atlanta Olympics, but it was not to be. Risky Business retired that year, first to Virginia, and then to California with Devon Sachey.

I started medical school in 1996, and had little to do with horses for several years. Finally, in late winter of 1999, I could take it no more. While in Toronto on elective at the Hospital for Sick Children, I escaped to see a clinic by Mark Todd at the York Equestrian Centre.

In 2000, we sought out the interested parties, and Maritime Eventing was launched in an effort to coordinate the eventing energies in the East. We have worked over the past seven years to build a program that could support the ambitions of riders in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Maine.

In the next twelve months, our operation will be moving back to the farm at Foshay in Lower Jemseg, New Brunswick. We will expand our current base of operations to provide a facility for the training of international level horses and riders, for the development of young riders from the Maritime provinces, as well as for competitions to host events at the CCI*/** star levels.

Should you have further questions regarding Foshay Farms Eventing, I would ask that you please contact myself, my wife Suzanne, or our manager Julie Ansems .

Michelle Mueller Eventing

Michele wanted a horse for as long as she can remember. She rode her first horse at 5 years old and owned her first horse at 7 ...a 16 hh 1 1/2 year old stud colt named Rusty.

In the early years, she competed on many different horses in English classes and Western games ... loving anything with speed. Her first show was the Port Perry Fair, and she continued to compete in many local fairs, jumpers, hunter, dressage and fox hunting.
Michelle Mueller Eventing
Michele`s mother, Lee, always emphasized good basics and at the age of 12 years old Michele began dressage lessons. She started dressage competition in 1989 and excelled in the dressage ring first on Travieso (Rambo) and later on Been Jazzin (Taz), both Trak/TB cross. She has also successfully competed in the Arabian dressage circuit on client`s horses. She continues her dressage training today with Karin Davis.

Michele is also a certified instructor through the Canadian Therapeutic Riding Association. Cedar Valley Stables was home to the Durham Therapeutic Riding Association (DTRA) for 9 years. Michele is also a certified Level 2 Coach with Equine Canada.

Michele always loved the sport of eventing but had to wait until she found a mount with the heart for x-country, which she discovered in Travieso in 1996, when he started his jumping career late in life at 10 years old. His training continued that summer and Michele & Travieso competed at their first event at Dreamcrest in 1996.

An injury ended Travieso`s eventing career at the Preliminary level, but he continued to teach aspiring dressage and event students at Cedar Valley Stables until his death in 2010.

Her next eventing mount was Cheevos Regale (Gene), a 15`3" Hol/Han cross, who took Michele to the 2 star level of competition. Gene was a natural jumper who would jump from paddock to paddock for fun and to annoy Bill and Michele. Gene continues his successful career in the jumper ring in Michigan, U.S.A.

Amistad, 3/4 TB 1/4 Belgian cross, is Michele`s present mount and is maturing into a brave and reliable horse. Since their partnership began in 2005, he continues to rise to all new challenges. He earns consistent dressage scores, he loves jumping, and he always gives 100% on the x-country course. This has been with the help of Ian Roberts and Robin Walker.

Michele and Amistad are currently training with Canadian Team Coach, David O`Connor, in preparation for a Spring CIC 3* at the Fork Horse Trials and Rolex 4* in April 2010.

A huge thank you goes out to Dr. Jamie Carter of Southern Equine Services in Aiken, SC and also to Maggie Turner of McKee Pownell Equine Services for their exceptional care of Amistad. Michele Mueller Eventing Cedar Valley Stables Port Perry, Ontario Canada 905-985-1232
