Riding Arena Surfaces
Essentially a good riding arena surface should reduce jarring of the horse’s limbs by offering a cushioning effect. It should provide a springy, yet secure footing for your horse. Preferably, a good surface should also be little affected by adverse weather conditions and have a good life span! This is an important aspect, when you consider some of the original surfaces such as wood bark, which used to end up as mush after only a few years of use. Some of the current surfaces on the market are summarised below and hopefully this will help you to make an informed decision as to which surface is right for you. However, the best thing to do is to do LOTS of research into ALL available surfaces as well as asking for samples.
Note: In terms of volume of surface, a general rule is that for a 20m x 40m arena the calculation is 20 x 40 x 0.25 = 200 cubic metres. This should give you an uncompressed surface depth of 10 inches and this then compresses to a working surface of approximately 6 to 7 inches.

White Paper on Racing Surfaces Released
The Racing Surfaces Committee formed at the inaugural Welfare and Safety of the Racehorse Summit in 2006 has published a 34-page "Racing Surfaces White Paper" that details the current state of knowledge pertaining to training and racing surfaces. The document, drafted as a collection of published scientific papers and data, was co-authored by Mick Peterson, MS, PhD (University of Maine); C. Wayne McIlwraith, BVSc, FRCVS, PhD, Dipl. ACVS, Dipl. ECVS (Colorado State University); Lars Roepstorff, VMD (Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences); Jeffrey J. Thomason, MSc, PhD (University of Guelph); and Christie Mahaffey, BS, MPhil (University of Maine), the Grayson/Jockey Club Research Foundation announced in a June 15 release.
The document was distributed to participants at the Track Superintendents' Field Day Conference June 14-16 at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pa.
"The fundamental issue behind doing this white paper was the fact that there has been limited academic study of racetracks," Peterson said in a statement. Grandstand Group, organiser of Horse of the Year Show and the British Open Show Jumping Championships, has today announced that it has terminated its agreement with Equestrian Surfaces Ltd following the problems with the quality of surface being supplied to the Shows.
Grandstand Group has taken immediate action to ensure competitors’ high standards are met, appointing Andrews Bowen Ltd to supply the arena surfaces for the Group’s equestrian events. The 2008 Diamond Jubilee Horse of the Year Show will be the first show to benefit from the Andrews Bowen ProWax surface as part of a new five year contract.
Grandstand Group Director, Mark Wein, commented, “Following the problems we have been experiencing with our surfaces over the past few Shows, culminating in the disastrous surface that was delivered to us for the British Open, I am delighted to sign with Andrews Bowen Ltd as the supplier of our surfaces for the next five years. We have worked with the principles of the business in the past and feel they are more than capable of delivering a top-class international surface that will reflect the calibre of our events.”
